Grats, I think you're the third person to comment on an article here! I like your comments on Strong Coffee. FantasyCraft, a pretty nifty D20 variant from Crafty Games, includes rules that drinking coffee grants you a +1 on Reflex saves for eight hours. If it's "spiced", this doubles to +2. This explains why rogues line up at Ye Olde Starbucks for a cinnamon-mocha cappucino before trying to disarm traps. Gotta love the AA ads Google splattered around this article. No wonder I make about 0.10/month on AdSense.

I'd say it's because "ale & whores" is such a strong genre trope - and the whores are optional. In fact it's such a strong trope that I'd point the causal arrow to "Tolkien used it because it is such a strong trope" rather than "It is such a strong trope because Tolkien used it." (Although Tolkien, being both English and Proper, had Beer instead of Ale and left the Whores right out.) More generally, Booze and Bars seems to be a strong meta-trope (is there such a thing?) in adventure-type fiction in general, no matter what the genre. A variant common in adventure-type fiction but mostly lacking in the fantasy genre is Strong Coffee as a non-alcoholic Strong Drink.
